Why am I being asked for a login code, and how do I trust my device?

Written by Chelsea

When you sign in to SeriousMD on the web from a device that is not on your Trusted Devices list, we email a one-time code to the address on your account.

Why the change?

Passwords leak from other websites all the time, and many people reuse the same one here. A code that only reaches your inbox means a leaked password on its own is not enough to open your account.

With all the recent news about AI brute forcing their way into certain websites along with a lot of databases with breached logins, we just want to add another layer of security for SeriousMD.

How to trust your device

Step 1: Sign in and enter the code from your email.

Step 2: Go to Settings > Security > Trusted Devices, or open https://seriousmd.com/doctor/app/settings/security/trusted-devices.

Step 3: Click Trust This Device.

Step 4: Give it a name you will recognize later ("Clinic laptop," "Personal iPhone") and enter your password to confirm.

Do this once on each device you actually use. You can remove a device from the same page at any time, for example a laptop you sold.

Never trust a shared computer. Whoever sits at it next would skip the code and land in your account.

Frequently Asked Questions

I trusted this device, so why am I asked again?

Trust is stored as a cookie in your browser. Clearing cookies, using incognito or private mode, or switching to a different browser makes the device look new. Use the same browser and check that it is not set to clear "Cookies and Other Site Data" when it closes.

I did not receive the code.

Check your spam or promotions folder first, then click Resend.

If it still does not arrive, the email on your account may have blocked or unsubscribed to SeriousMD emails in the past. Sign in from a device you already trust and check it under Settings > Login and Security > E-mail Address, or message us in the app and we will help you unblock the email.

I got a code I did not ask for.

Someone entered your correct password. The code stopped them, but change your password now and turn on two-factor authentication.

Do my secretary and staff get the code too?

Yes, they will.

Is this the same as two-factor authentication?

No. The login code fires once per new device.
Two-factor authentication asks for a code on every sign-in and is the stronger option; we recommend it for every account.
