Virtual background isn't working (Chrome)

Written by Chelsea

If you can't turn on your virtual background during a call on Chrome, try these steps in order.

1. Turn on graphics acceleration

Chrome needs this setting on to run the virtual background.

Step 1: Click the three-dot menu at the top right of Chrome, then click Settings.

Step 2: Click System on the left, then turn on Use graphics acceleration when available.

Step 3: Click Relaunch when Chrome asks. The setting won't apply until Chrome restarts.

Step 4: Start your call again and set your virtual background.

2. Update Chrome

Go to the three-dot menu, then Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on that page. If one installs, click Relaunch.

3. Check if an extension is blocking your camera

  1. Open an incognito window (three-dot menu > New Incognito Window).

  2. Log in to SeriousMD and start a test call there.

Extensions are turned off in incognito. If the virtual background works there, one of your extensions is causing it.

4. Open the call in a new tab

The call runs inside the page, and that can stop the virtual background from loading.

  1. While you're on the call screen, click the (three dots) at the bottom of the call panel.

  2. Click Open in a new tab.

  3. Set your virtual background from there.

5. Try another browser

If the virtual background still won't turn on, start the call on another browser.

Still not working?

Older computers might not have the processing power to run the virtual background.
